Learning Life Skills through English Materials: Integrating Life Skills in English Pedagogy

John Dewey once said that “education is not an affair of ‘telling’ and being told, but active constructive process.” Accordingly, pedagogical processes should simply be conducted by traditional lecturing, rather, they gradually build the meaning-making process children through their participation. Therefore, this paper aims to suggest materials integrate English learning LSE are specifically designed for Indonesian children. As a follow-up project from previous program, current community service focuses on implementation life skills education (LSE) integrating with in non-formal educational institutions Malang, East Indonesia Taman Bacaan Masyarakat (TBM) Wacan as partner. In doing so, program three phases activities: planning, implementation, evaluation collaboration student volunteers. result, has mapped out fourteen units, which were embedded into LSE. The units have four major themes, namely, self-awareness self-esteem, inter- intrapersonal skill, problem-solving, time conflict management. Each themes was then explored, emphasized focused different purposes tried evaluate whether material fit children’s context or needed more adjustment. However, due limited resources, only one unit identify its usability flexibility. Based findings, it recommended can integrated improve performance using language also broader competitive era.
